The Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) is a body corporate established on the 1st July 2005, under the Universities Act 2005 (Chapter 346 of the Laws of Tanzania) with mandate to recognise, approve, register and accredit Universities operating in Tanzania, and local or foreign University level programmes being offered by registered higher education institutions. It also coordinates the proper functioning of all university institutions in Tanzania so as to foster a harmonised higher education system in the country.

TCU GUIDELINES FOR UNIVERSITY ADMISSIONS IN TANZANIA 2020/ 2021
A. FORM SIX: GENERAL MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
1. Completed A’ Level Studies before 2014:
▪︎ Two principal passes with a total of 4.0 points in Two Subjects defining the admission into the respective programme (where A = 5; B = 4; C= 3; D = 2; E = 1; S = 0.5)
2. Completed A’ Level Studies in 2014 and 2015:
▪︎ Two principal passes (‘C’ and above) with a total of 4.0 points from Two Subjects defining the admission into the respective programme (where A = 5; B+ = 4; B = 3; C= 2; D = 1; E = 0.5)
3. Completed A’ Level Studies from 2016 onwards:
Two principal passes with a total of 4.0 points in Two Subjects defining the admission into the respective programme (where A = 5; B = 4; C= 3; D = 2; E = 1; S = 0.5)
4. Foundation Programme of the OUT
▪︎ A GPA of 3.0 accumulated from six core subjects and at least a C grade from three subjects in respective cluster (Arts, Science and Business Studies) PLUS
▪︎ An Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination with at least 1.5 from two subjects OR An Ordinary Diploma from the recognized institution with a GPA of at least 2.0 OR NTA level 5 /Professional Technician Level II Certificate.
B. ORDINARY DIPLOMA, FTC AND EQUIVALENT QUALIFICATION APPLICANTS
1. Minimum Undergraduate Admission Entry Qualifications
At least four passes („D‟s and above) at O‟ Level or NVA Level III with less than four O‟ Level passes or equivalent foreign qualifications as established by either NECTA or VETA; AND
▪︎ At least a GPA of 3.0 for Ordinary Diploma (NTA Level 6); OR
▪︎ Average of “C” for Full Technician Certificate (FTC) (where A=5, B=4, C=3, and D=2 points); OR
▪︎ Average of „B‟ Grade for Diploma in Teacher Education;OR
▪︎ Average of „B+‟ Grade for Health related awards such as Clinical Medicine and others; OR
▪︎ A Distinction for unclassified Diplomas and certificates;
▪︎ Upper Second Class for classified non-NTA
2. All Health Related Programmes
▪︎ All equivalent applicants must have an appropriate Diploma or Advanced Diploma with an average of “B’’ or a minimum GPA of 3.0. In addition, an applicant must have a minimum of “D” grade in the following subjects: Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and English at O-Level. 2.
3. Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering:
▪︎ Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Biomedical, Electrical, Electronics and Telecommunication, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science with an average of “B+” or a minimum GPA of 3.5. In addition, an applicant must have a minimum of “D” grade in the following subjects:
- Mathematics,
- Chemistry,
- Biology,
- Physics and
- English at O-Level.
4. Bachelor of Science in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics and Bachelor of Science in Food, Nutrition and Dietetics
▪︎ Diploma in Clinical Medicine, Agriculture, Nutrition, Environmental Health, Nursing or Midwifery with an average of “B+’’ or a minimum GPA of 3.5. In addition, an applicant must have a minimum of “D” grade in the following subjects: Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and English at O-Level.
